Obtaining a driver's license does not necessarily mean the ability to drive safely
The head of the Safe Driving School, Jānis Vanks, states that when obtaining a driver's license, which means permission to participate in traffic, the driver must be able to control the vehicle even in extreme situations. Unfortunately, driving schools usually do not teach this, so not all drivers know how to act in non-standard situations. In addition to that, every driver must keep up with changes in road traffic rules, as ignorance of them can also create additional risks on the roads.
More than a third of drivers do not tend to refresh their knowledge
According to the "Carlsberg 0.0 Responsible Driving Index", 34% of drivers do not tend to refresh their knowledge of road rules or driving skills, another 14% believe that they do not need to, 22% say that they are happy to use various online tests and other free solutions and only 3% attend additional driving lessons. Another number of drivers indicate that they follow CSDD news. Of course, the fact that more than a third of drivers do not tend to refresh their knowledge is not encouraging, but it is important to separate driving skills and knowledge of the rules.
Changes to the rules can be confusing
If the driver has a lot of experience and drives every day, in different seasons and weather conditions, it can be said with high probability that such a driver does not need to repeat practical driving. However, this does not mean that there is no need to refresh your knowledge of the rules, as they are subject to change. Changes in traffic rules do not happen often. The last major changes were in 2016, when new road signs were introduced that inform about the beginning of the settlement. Signs with the silhouette of the city on a white background have already been installed throughout the territory of Latvia. This sign indicates that you must drive at a speed of 50 kilometers per hour. Until then, it was customary that the name of the settlement on a white background meant speed reduction, but on a blue background - it was still allowed to drive at 90 kilometers per hour.
A completely different situation is when the right is obtained, but active daily driving does not follow. If the break between obtaining a driver's license and actively driving on a daily basis is too long, we recommend using the service - skills refresher. Another aspect is also the age of the drivers - drivers of respectable years must critically evaluate their ability to concentrate, vision, ability to react immediately, etc.
The ability to control the car even in an extreme situation
Looking at the fact that there is still a high number of road traffic accidents in Latvia, including injuries and deaths, but at the same time a large number of drivers believe that it is not necessary to refresh their driving skills and knowledge of the rules, it can be concluded that some drivers have a light-hearted attitude. Knowledge and skills must be brought to a level where you can confidently call yourself a safe driver. And getting a driver's license doesn't guarantee that, unfortunately. The ability to control the car even in an extreme situation is extremely important. It is best if such a situation never comes, however, even one case can be fatal, so it is important to prepare.
Drivers must be confident in their driving skills in all conditions
There are very difficult driving conditions in Latvia - four different seasons, a long dark time of the year, not all sections of the road are illuminated, and the quality of the roadways is also different. Therefore, it is important for drivers to practice and brush up on their driving skills in order to become confident and safe road users.
