What should I do if my car has a technical problem in the middle of the road?
The car suddenly has technical problems and has to be stopped in an unauthorized place - what to do? Situations can vary, but it is not always clear how to proceed and who to ask for help. In this article, we will find out how to act and warn other drivers about a parked car on the road, how to get around an obstacle that should always be in the car and what help is available. In addition, we conducted a survey among the followers of the Safe Driving School social networks.
No driver knows what it means to stay on the road due to a car's technical problems. This is also confirmed by the data of our survey - 64% of the respondents admit that they have had technical problems on the road. Such problems are unpredictable and occur spontaneously. 84% of these respondents know what to do in such situations, when they have to stop the car in an unauthorized place, but 16% of the respondents admit that it is not clear what to do.
The car should always have a specially designed safety kit consisting of an emergency triangle, a reflective vest, a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit. It is not for nothing that these things are monitored during car inspections and it is important to remember that the fire extinguisher must have a valid service life. Survey data shows that not all cars are equipped with these things. 33% of respondents admit that they do not have a fire extinguisher in their cars, 15% of respondents have not purchased a first aid kit, 28% admit that they do not have reflective vests in their car and 12% have not been provided with an emergency triangle.
It would also be important to have a contact list to ask for help in resolving the problem more quickly. For example, keep the helpline number of your car insurer on the phone if you have purchased the appropriate policy to provide assistance in such cases. If such a policy has not been purchased, you can seek help from special companies that offer 24-hour roadside assistance or contact your car service. Survey data show that 81% of respondents know who to ask for help and who to contact in a situation where the car has a technical problem, but 19% of respondents admit that they do not know where to turn for help in such a situation.
How to act in a situation when the car has technical problems on the road and it is no longer possible to continue driving, comments the director of the Safe Driving School Jānis Vanks:
'If a vehicle has to be forcibly stopped where stopping is prohibited or is likely to endanger road safety, the first step is to switch on the hazard warning lights and display the hazard warning triangle at a distance from the vehicle to alert other drivers of the danger. The emergency triangle must extend at least 15 m from the vehicle in built-up areas and at least 100 m from the vehicle outside built-up areas.
To be able to move around your car and other road users safely, you should wear a reflective vest. It is especially important to put on a vest in the dark. ”
'Other road users must significantly reduce their speed when they see an emergency triangle and a stationary car with a hazard warning light on. If the obstacle is to be overtaken when entering the opposite lane, the vehicle in front must be given its way before the overtaking maneuver and the journey can be continued. "
In order to find out what Technical Assistance can be received and what insurance policy provides it, comments the insurance company ERGO, a cooperation partner of the Safe Driving School:
“In our insurance company ERGO Technical assistance on the road is provided by a CASCO policy or an OCTA policy, in which technical assistance is purchased, which costs only 15 EUR per year. To receive assistance, the customer must call ERGO's 24-hour helpline or +371 67081 887 abroad and call for technical assistance. ”
“Depending on the nature of the t / l damage, the t / l will be repaired on site or the t / l and its driver and one passenger will be transported in the territory of Latvia to any address specified by the customer, but outside Latvia to the nearest service. The remaining passengers in the vehicle will be transported up to 50 km from the scene of the accident to the required address. "
“If the t / l cannot be repaired within one working day, then the customer is provided with a free rental t / l for a period of up to 3 days. If the accident has occurred outside Latvia and the t / l cannot be repaired within 24 hours, then the t / l driver and passengers are paid a hotel for each person with a limit of up to 40 EUR and a total limit of up to 240 EUR. ”
"To make it easier for the customer to report their location, after receiving the call, the customer is sent an SMS with a link to which the service provider sees the customer's location. Customers will soon have access to functionality that allows them to see the tow truck approaching, similar to taxi apps. In order for the customer to receive technical assistance as soon as possible, the nearest available tow truck is sent to him. ”
According to the survey data, not everyone in the car has a complete safety kit, so DBS is organizing a competition with its partner insurance company ERGO, where it is possible to win two such specially designed kits, consisting of an emergency triangle, reflective vest, fire extinguisher and first aid kit.
